This history examines Black women’s work for voting rights in the United States, a perspective often missing from familiar accounts of the suffrage movement. It begins with enslavement and its effects on voting rights, then traces connections and conflicts between abolition and voting-rights campaigns after emancipation. The book addresses the racism Black women encountered within the women’s suffrage movement and follows their organizing across abolition, suffrage, and civil-rights efforts. Sidebars introduce African American women who played important parts in these struggles, and the volume concludes with source notes, a bibliography, and an index.
