Sophie Brown cares for chickens with special powers, inherited by her family from her late Great Uncle Jim. As she prepares to oversee her first hatching, two additional unusual chickens join the flock and her cousin Luna comes to stay while attending a nearby college. The newly hatched chicks behave strangely, and one appears able to breathe fire. Sophie gets help from Luna as her cousin adjusts to college life, including anxiety heightened by an incident of racism. Sophie’s friends Sam and Chris are also ready to help, though she hopes they will get along better with Xochi, another student at school.
