On an overnight seventh-grade trip to Washington, D.C., Tally must share a room with Ava, a popular girl she dislikes. Tally is protective of her friends Spider and Sonnet and dismissive of girls who focus on appearance. As the trip continues, she notices Ava’s daily number lists, excessive exercise, and food restriction, and suspects these may signal an eating disorder. Although Tally does not like Ava, she comes to believe Ava needs help. Ava wants to keep her illness secret, leaving Tally uncertain about what to do.
