Africville

This picture book presents Africville, the Black community that existed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from the late eighteenth century until the 1960s, through the perspective of a young girl. Its lyrical text recalls the people, places, and everyday details that shaped community life, while richly textured illustrations frame the narrative through scenes of a later reunion. Additional material describes the community’s origins, the lack of essential services and outside support, its demolition by Halifax, and the events that followed, including an apology, recognition as a National Historic Site of Canada, and a church replica that became a museum.
