In this first-person account, Alfredo recalls traveling with his father from La Ceja, Mexico, to the United States after his father can no longer support the family there. A guide disappears after helping them cross a river, so father and son continue alone and settle among old vehicles and furniture known as the Embassy. Alfredo begins school while frightened and unable to understand English, then finds support from an older Spanish-speaking boy. Four years later, the rest of his family joins them in the United States.
