A Tulip in Winter: A Story about Folk Artist Maud Lewis

Kathy Stinson, illustrated by Lauren Soloy

This picture-book account follows Nova Scotian folk artist Maud Lewis from childhood into adulthood. When a condition later identified as rheumatoid arthritis made piano playing difficult, Maud found she could paint with a brush her mother gave her. Drawn to color, line, and shape, she kept making art despite financial hardship. After marrying Everett Lewis, Maud painted throughout their small home, on surfaces ranging from doors and windows to household objects and the stove. Her work transformed the previously dreary house into a place filled with art.
