A red fox wonders what to do as winter approaches. Other animals each offer a suggestion based on their own way of preparing: a caterpillar proposes a chrysalis, a turtle recommends deep mud, and others point to nuts, caves, sleep, or migration. None feels right to the fox. At last, another red fox offers a different answer: when snow fills the air, the two can join its twirling, tumbling movement. The story follows the fox’s search for a winter response that suits him.
