When We Gather (Ostadahlisiha): A Cherokee Tribal Feast
Andrea L. Rogers, illustrated by Madelyn Goodnight
A Cherokee girl and her family prepare for a community feast that welcomes spring. With her uncle and younger brother, she harvests wild green onions, while family members use different tools for digging. They leave most of the onions in the ground so more can grow for the next spring. At the community center, the family helps cook dishes including corn soup, grape dumplings stew, and wild onions with eggs. A prayer of thanks comes before the meal.
