Welcoming Elijah: A Passover Tale with a Tail
Lesléa Newman, illustrated by Susan Gal
During a contemporary Passover Seder, a brown-skinned boy takes part in traditional rituals with relatives and friends while a stray kitten spends the evening outside his home. The story moves between the warm gathering and the kitten’s solitary surroundings: the boy dips parsley in salt water and hears about the Israelites’ departure from Egypt, while the kitten explores the outdoors. When the boy opens the door for Elijah, he finds the kitten looking in, and the kitten gains a home. An author’s note explains Passover customs.
