Water Day

Margarita Engle, illustrated by Olivia Sua

In a Cuban village without running water from taps, a young girl’s family depends on a weekly delivery from the water man. The water is transferred from his truck or horse-drawn wagon into tanks for each family’s household needs, including bathing, cooking, laundry, drinking, and flushing. On delivery day, the girl’s parents repair a hose and pump, while her great-grandmother remembers when rain filled wells and clay jars. Fish are later delivered for the stored water to eat mosquito larvae and help prevent malaria.
