Maya Younger and her twin sister Nikki enter their senior year as gentrification changes their North Portland neighborhood. Maya has expected to attend Spelman University with Nikki and their friend Essence, but the sisters respond differently as new shops and residents arrive. Rising rents force Essence and her mother to move to a less safe, cheaper part of Portland. At school, a new principal promotes a diluted version of multiculturalism while sidelining traditional Black history and community events. Racial slurs and property damage follow, and Maya and her friends work toward healing the community.
