The Water Walker

This account portrays Ojibwe grandmother Josephine Mandamin, whom the narrator calls Nokomis, and her devotion to Nibi, or water. Concerned about water quality and conservation, she organizes other Ojibwe women to walk the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River, blessing and singing along the route. The seven-year undertaking is followed by walks involving women from other Native Nations around additional oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and northern frozen regions. A glossary defines Ojibwe words.
