The Sky Was My Blanket: A Young Man’s Journey Across Wartime Europe

Uri Shulevitz

This true account follows Yehiel Szulewicz after he leaves his Polish home in 1930 at fifteen. Seeking a wider world and chafing against his father’s strict religious parenting, he crosses Europe without required identity or travel papers. His route includes Czechoslovakia, Austria, Croatia, Italy, France, and Spain as fascist forces spread. Yehiel fights with the Spanish Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War and works with the Jewish Resistance in France. He and one brother survive World War II, while his parents and two brothers do not.
