Nonbinary Ave moves from Mexicali to Lawrence, Kansas, with their mother and younger brother Ramón. Ave misses home, knows little English, and worries that learning it could mean losing their native language. During the summer, Ave meets Rene and is welcomed into his friend group and relay team. Then Ave learns that their parents have separated and that the family will not reunite, forcing Ave and their mother to address feelings they have kept private.
