May’s older brother Danny, a basketball star bound for Princeton, dies by suicide shortly before graduation. His death sends May’s Chinese American family into an emotional spiral. Returning to school for her junior year, May receives support from her Haitian American best friend, Tiya Marie, and Tiya Marie’s brother Marc. After a white parent publicly blames Asian parents for teen suicides, May writes a poem that starts a #TakeBacktheNarrative movement among BIPOC students. Students also plan to protest an internship program sponsored by that parent.
