A Song Called Home
Sara Zarr
Lou’s mother plans to marry Steve, requiring Lou and her older sister Casey to leave San Francisco for the suburbs, new schools, and distance from their friends. Both sisters worry that Steve may become unreliable or cruel, like their mostly absent father, who struggles with alcoholism. Lou keeps her feelings inside and steals small items, while Casey has angry outbursts and spends time with old friends. They find some relief with neighbors Shannon and Marcus. Lou receives a guitar for her eleventh birthday and takes lessons from Marcus, hoping a talent-show performance might help bring her father back into the family.
