The Revolution of Birdie Randolph

Birdie hides her relationship with Booker because she fears her parents will judge his time in juvenile detention, despite the circumstances behind it. She also resents her mother’s protectiveness and the family’s high expectations. Birdie’s aunt Carlene, who is sober and training for a cosmetology license after years of addiction, offers a less rigid presence in her life. Birdie’s mother has worked hard to move beyond a difficult past and build her own salon. When Birdie makes a discovery about her family, it overturns what she thought she understood and forces her to reassess those relationships.
