The Night Before Eid: A Muslim Family Story
Aya Khalil, illustrated by Rashin Kheiriyeh
Zain is excited when his grandmother, Teita, arrives from Egypt, especially because they will make ka’ak for Eid together. They use ingredients brought from Egypt, including ghee, dates, and honey. As they bake, Teita remembers making the cookies with Zain’s mother when she was young and shares their cultural history. Zain struggles to press dough into the cookie mold, and Teita reminds him that patience is beautiful. He finds his own way to decorate the treats and proudly shares them with classmates after the holiday.
