In 1912, eleven-year-old Lucy Landry loses her guardian shortly after her father dies in a shipwreck. An Ojibwe family living in a lighthouse on a tiny Lake Superior island offers to foster Lucy, who is Ojibwe and French American and afraid of water. The Martin children resent her arrival, while Lucy tries so hard to help that she sometimes makes mistakes. She copes by inventing personas and stories about her father. Lucy is especially focused on his tale of a message in a bottle about a ruby necklace lost in a capsized boat.
