Told in a cumulative pattern modeled on “The House That Jack Built,” this story traces an Ethiopian Gabi from cottonseed to a gift for Girma. Cotton grows and is harvested; its seeds are removed by hand, and the fiber is spun into yarn. On a large hand-operated loom, the yarn becomes a white woven garment with a colorful geometric border, then is assembled and fringed. Genet chooses the finished Gabi as a gift for her husband, Girma.
