The Fish of Small Wishes
Elana K. Arnold, illustrated by Magdalena Mora
Kiki, a shy girl who finds it hard to join the other children on her block, rescues a golden fish stranded on hot asphalt. She puts it in the bathtub, and the fish offers wishes—but only small ones. Kiki wishes for friends and to be less shy, then asks for a deep courtyard pond when the fish rapidly outgrows the tub. That wish is also too large, so Kiki must call to the other children for help digging. Their shared work draws in siblings and parents as they create a makeshift pond.
