The Brightwood Code

Edda, eighteen, returns from World War I service as a Hello Girl with the American Expeditionary Forces. Now a Bell Systems operator in Washington, D.C., she is burdened by guilt over forgetting the code word “Brightwood” during the war, when thirty-four soldiers died. Haunting calls urge Edda to reveal what happened overseas. With help from Theo, a fellow boarding-house resident, she investigates who is making the calls and confronts the consequences of the past.
