Tethered to Other Stars
Elisa Stone Leahy
Seventh grader Wendy Toledo has learned from her Salvadoran American father and Guatemalan mother not to draw attention to the family. At a new middle school, racist incidents affect Wendy and her friends, but she tries to minimize them, including the possibility that a boy she likes could be involved. She is paired with him to build a telescope for a science project while her older brother supports Luz, a woman taking sanctuary from ICE in a nearby church. Old documents prompt Wendy to question her family’s past.
