Golden is devoted to soccer and determined to practice 10,000 hours to master the game. A Lionel Messi fan, he is thrilled to become co-captain alongside his best friend, Lucy, while his mother coaches the team. His father, once a professional soccer player, has ALS, which increasingly limits his ability to control his body. Golden struggles to accept that his father will eventually die, believing that a championship game, exercise, and optimism might help defeat the illness. Lucy’s planned move to Maine further unsettles him as his family faces his father’s decline.
