Stick and Stone

Beth Ferry, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

Stick and Stone are each alone until a pinecone mocks Stone. Stick speaks up for Stone, beginning an unlikely friendship between the two. Later, a hurricane separates them and gives Stone the chance to help Stick. The story uses the characters’ different shapes to play with numbers: alone, Stone is a zero and Stick is a one; together, they make ten. A pinecone that first acts as an adversary eventually changes its behavior.
