Eleven-year-old Stella and her brother Jojo see a burning cross and men dressed in white in their North Carolina town. As the danger grows, members of the African American community meet at Stella’s house. When Stella’s father, the preacher, and Mr. Spencer register to vote, Mr. Spencer’s home is burned. Neighbors, including some white residents, come together to care for his family during the Depression.
