Squire
Sara Alfageeh, Nadia Shammas
When the Bayt-Sajji Empire opens squire training to young people from every background, Aiza sees a possible path toward citizenship, knighthood, and economic stability. She is Ornu, a member of a conquered people denied citizenship and treated with contempt by the government and its citizens. At her parents’ request, she conceals her Ornu identity at training camp. Although the recruits differ and compete, friendships form among them. After Aiza becomes a squire, the camp general begins using her in a plan meant to advance the Empire’s interests and manipulate the Ornu. The fantasy setting and characters draw inspiration from the diversity of the Arab world.
