Princess Ash returns to Haven after a long absence and finds herself judged for her crushed leg and use of a cane. Splinter serves as a squire but endures harassment from other squires because people see her as a girl, though Splinter does not identify as a girl or a boy. After Ash publicly supports Splinter, Splinter promises to protect her. The queen asks Ash to befriend two noble sisters whose family is suspected of opposing the crown. Ash grows reluctant as friendship develops, before she is taken from the palace.
