Amil and the After

Veera Hiranandani

Twelve-year-old Amil, who is both Muslim and Hindu, lives in Bombay after a difficult departure from his former home in what is now Pakistan. Although he has a home and attends school in India, he remains uncertain about what home means. The upheaval of Partition and the loss of the family’s old life weigh on him. Amil’s twin sister, Nisha, encourages him to make drawings for the mother they lost as babies. Drawing offers him release and connection, but it also causes tension with his father, who wants Amil to concentrate more on schoolwork.
