Chance receives Penny, a life-sized marionette from a curiosity-shop owner, and discovers that touching her strings lets him hear her thoughts. Penny remembers little of her earlier existence. After a shadowy visitor cuts her strings, Chance tries to repair them with a spindle and instead trades bodies with her. Chance’s sister Constance joins Penny, now in Chance’s body, to search for him. Their pursuit leads to a mystery involving a dangerous puppeteer and children who vanished over many years.
