During the Great Depression, ten-year-old Margarita Sandoval moves with her family from New Mexico to Wyoming, where her father has railroad work. She misses the home and grandmother she left behind and hopes to make a friend in her new town. As a Mexican American family in the minority, the Sandovals encounter exclusion, discrimination, and pressure on Margarita to use a different name. Margarita also works to repay a store debt while questioning whether a new friendship is genuine.
