Shut Up, This Is Serious

After her father leaves with the family’s savings, Mexican American Belén struggles at home and in school, where she is failing. Her mother is often absent or crying, while her older sister works constantly to support them. Belén experiences depression as a suffocating physical pressure and worries she may grow to resemble her father in appearance and behavior. A relationship with college student Alexis briefly eases her feelings but causes lasting hurt. Meanwhile, her best friend Leti, an ambitious AP student, becomes pregnant.
