Set in the 1840s, this novel follows fourteen-year-old Mary Jane from a Minnesota Territory trading post southward after a letter requests help from her mother’s sister. Mary Jane assists her aunt’s family and, after tragedy, accompanies her orphaned teenage cousins to another uncle. That uncle is a slaveholder, and Mary Jane acts to protect her cousins after witnessing his abuse of one of them. Along the way, she thwarts two con men, including the young Huck Finn. Mary Jane is a minor character from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
