During the final days of World War II, Joanna, Emilia, and Florian are refugees trying to reach a Polish port as the Russian army advances. Each carries private pain and has difficulty trusting others, but they form a makeshift family with fellow travelers. At the port, German ships offer a possible escape, while far more refugees arrive than the vessels can hold. Their paths also intersect with Alfred, a teenage Nazi sailor. The story is inspired by the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, which killed thousands of evacuees.
