Fifteen-year-old Amadou and his younger brother, Seydou, leave their village in Mali seeking seasonal work to help their family. Instead, they are tricked into working without pay on a cacao plantation in Ivory Coast, where food is scarce and missed quotas bring beatings. When Khadija, an educated girl kidnapped to silence her journalist mother, arrives at the camp, she and Amadou begin planning an escape. Their need to flee becomes more urgent after Seydou is badly injured and requires medical care. The novel follows their dangerous attempt to reach safety.
