Each is either giving or receiving an obscene hand gesture. Context reveals the frustration, humiliation, fear, despair, and sometimes longstanding family pain behind the gesture. The interconnected accounts also include moments of tenderness and connection among people whose circumstances are not immediately visible to one another.
