Only This Beautiful Moment
Abdi Nazemian
Across 1939, 1978, and 2019, the narratives of three Iranian and Iranian American men uncover secrets in one family. Seventeen-year-old Moud travels with his father from Los Angeles to Iran to visit his dying grandfather, anxious about Iran’s treatment of LGBTQ people and his father’s limited acknowledgment of his queerness. In 1978, Saeed leaves Iran after protesting; in the United States, he learns that both parents are gay and entered a marriage that hid their identities. In 1939, his father Bobby works as a child actor under his mother’s control.
