A counting story begins with one starling perched high above town. More birds arrive one at a time through ten, then the flock grows from hundreds into a vast group. When a hawk startles them, the starlings sweep through the sky together in shifting waves. A note identifies this group flight as a murmuration. As night comes, the birds leave or roost, and the count decreases until one bird remains again. Rhyming verse follows the numbers while the changing flock reveals the movement and pattern of starlings in flight.
