As a child, Ona Judge was enslaved by George and Martha Washington. She cared for chickens and fetched water before moving to indoor work at age ten. The Washingtons took her first to New York City and then to Philadelphia, where seeing free Black people showed her they would not release her. After learning she would be passed to a relative as a wedding gift, Ona decided to flee. Although several people recognized her and tried to send her back, she avoided each attempt.
