Ninitohtênân / We Listen

Caitlin Dale, with Leona Morin-Neilson Nicholson

A Cree girl visits her grandmother, Nôhkom, with her mother and a friend. As they walk in the woods to gather berries and other ingredients for a meal, the girl describes the elder’s actions and how the others repeat them: praying, picking, and listening. The pattern changes when Nôhkom and the mother rest while the children do not. The bilingual narrative appears in Y Cree, in roman orthography and syllabics, as well as English.
