Sova has long wanted to accompany her mother, a scientist who monitors saw-whet owl migration each October. Once she is old enough to stay up late, Sova joins her mother to check a net set for owls. Their first two checks bring only dry autumn leaves, and Sova learns that catching an owl is never certain. On the final check, they find a small saw-whet owl. Sova watches her mother measure it, record data, fit it with a band, and release it into the night.
