Bob the seagull feels lonely among shore creatures and his fellow gulls until another bird gives him a red jacket, complete with fries in its pocket. Wearing it changes how Bob approaches crabs, pelicans, seals, fish, and his flock. After a wave carries the jacket away, Bob searches the beach for it. When it returns, he recognizes that the friendships he has made do not depend on the coat, and he gives it to a sad turtle.
