My Mighty Journey: A Waterfall’s Story
John Coy, illustrated by Gaylord Schanilec
A waterfall narrates its own history from long ago to the present. Known as Owamniyomni by the Dakota and as St. Anthony Falls by non-Natives, it has moved 15 miles upriver over time and remembers geologic change as well as human effects on the river. The falls are now dammed and quieter at the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis. The account connects the waterfall’s personified voice with the history of the Mississippi River, the surrounding area, and Dakota relationships with the river and falls.
