In Atlanta, Jameela, known as Jam, hopes to become a journalist and serves as features editor for her middle school newspaper. Her father’s new job in Abu Dhabi eases the family’s financial concerns but leaves the family missing him. Jam interviews Ali, a British Pakistani Muslim boy, about experiences with microaggressions, although he does not want to discuss them for publication. When Jam’s draft is printed accidentally, she must address the harm to both her reporting and her friendship with Ali. Her sister Bisma’s lymphoma treatment further unsettles the family.
