A young Black girl spends time with seven “Big Mamas” in seven different homes when her mother works late or travels. These friends and relatives share parts of their lives with her: Miss Zikora sings in several languages, Aunt Lily helps her work through math questions with pots and pans, and Lil Jackie lets her count tip-jar change. Their interests prompt the girl to imagine possible futures for herself. When her mother returns, the women and the girl come together for a potluck meal.
