Learning to Fall

Sally Engelfried

Thirteen-year-old Daphne spends the summer in Oakland with her father while her mother films a movie in Prague. She still feels hurt by a missed tenth-birthday meeting at a skate park, where she had hoped he would teach her an ollie. Trying it alone left her with a broken arm, and she has not skateboarded since. Her father has entered treatment for alcoholism and is working to repair their relationship with help from relatives, friends, and AA. A friendship with Alex helps Daphne gradually lower her defenses and reconsider whether she can trust her father.
