John’s Turn
Mac Barnett
Each Friday, a student performs at a school assembly, and this week John takes the stage. He is nervous as he changes clothes during the announcements and waits to be introduced. When the performance begins, John dances ballet to music that prompts questions and laughter from some classmates. Across nearly wordless pages, his expression shifts from anxiety to joy. After his bow, the children applaud, and their faces are joyful too.
