Jo Jo Makoons: The Used-to-Be Best Friend
Dawn Quigley, illustrated by Tara Audibert
Seven-year-old Jo Jo Makoons attends first grade on her Ojibwe reservation. She counts her cat Mimi as her closest friend and Fern as her best school friend, but feels unsettled when Fern begins sitting with other children at lunch. Jo Jo’s kokum reminds her that she need not be friends with everyone, but should be friendly to everyone. Episodic chapters follow Jo Jo as she learns to rhyme, brings her cat to school, enters an art contest, and worries about Mimi’s visit to the veterinarian. Ojibwe words and cultural references appear throughout.
