In first-person poems, Moishe Moskowitz recounts being thirteen when Nazis invaded Poland and his family’s efforts to survive the Holocaust. He was the only member of his immediate family to survive. The poems are based on the story he told his daughter, Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet. One episode takes place near the war’s end, when women in Czechoslovakia raid a bakery and throw warm bread to starving Jews packed into a cattle car. An ending note adds information about Moishe’s later immigration to the United States and includes family photographs.
