As an African American rider, he enters the rodeo competitions that will admit him. At the 1911 Pendleton Roundup, he competes on a half-wild horse against Jackson Sundown and John Spain. When Spain receives first prize, disappointed spectators raise money for Fletcher by selling pieces of his hat.
